Many people consider mystical states of rapture or illumination to be abnormal and even dangerous. According to them, we should only trust our intellect, because at least this is sensible and level-headed. But when it comes to indulging in pleasures, instincts and passions, ah, that is another matter. Instead of using their intellect and realizing that they will be inviting in all sorts of noxious elements that will ravage them, these oh-so sensible and rational people revel in them. In this case, they think that it is not only legitimate but advisable not to let their intellect interfere, so as to fully indulge their attractions and sensations. And this is what they call ‘living’. Well, they are mistaken. It is precisely at these times that they should keep a cool head, refuse such pleasures, and try instead to experience states that are divine.
