Every living creature has a passive feminine side, which symbolizes darkness, and an active masculine side, which symbolizes light. The light must penetrate the darkness in order to illuminate it and extract its many riches. In us, for instance, the intellect represents the light and the heart represents the dark. The intellect penetrates the heart (ours and that of others) in order to illuminate it and work with it. To use an image, one could say that the intellect must penetrate and withdraw from the heart in the way a piston moves up and down. If you do not use your intellect in this way, you are incapable of understanding anything and are, above all, incapable of knowing yourself. By penetrating the deep chasm of the heart with its light, wisdom finds all the treasures hidden there – seams of precious stones, metals and priceless liquids. Into the dark well of the heart the intellect descends and comes back up, descends and rises again, extracting supplies of the heart's precious water.
