Numbers remain abstractions for us because of the way we work with them, when in reality they are concrete, alive and full of meaning. Take the number 6, for example: the product of 2 times 3. Solomon’s seal is built on this structure: two opposing and interpenetrating triangles. These two triangles symbolize the unity of matter and spirit in the universe and the fusion of the lower and higher nature in human beings. Thus, Solomon’s seal expresses the balance of antagonistic forces in the universe and in the human being: matter no longer opposes spirit, and our lower nature becomes the servant of our higher nature. People are not in the habit of considering numbers as living entities, which is why so many passages in the sacred books remain obscure. Only the cabbalists possess the true science of numbers.
