In numerous traditions, the goal of the spiritual quest is symbolized by one or more objects that initiates manage to gain after accomplishing long and arduous tasks. The magic wand, for example, as well as the elixir of eternal life, the universal panacea, the magic mirror and the philosopher’s stone are in reality the symbols of faculties they have successfully developed, powers they have succeeded in obtaining. Do they possess them on the physical plane? Sometimes, yes, but that’s not the point: they must first seek to possess them within themselves in the form of qualities and virtues, and they must work with them. These five symbols correspond to the sephiroth of the central pillar of the Tree of Life, the Sephirotic Tree: the magic wand corresponds to Kether, the magic mirror to Daath, the universal panacea to Tiphareth, the elixir of eternal life to Yesod and the philosopher’s stone to Malkuth.
