Imagine you wish to scale Mont Blanc, but you are not a mountaineer: you know you need a guide, for no one doubts a guide is useful, even essential, in such a situation! But when it comes to spiritual life, many people imagine they don’t need a guide! Spiritual life is a much riskier undertaking than the ascent of a peak; there is much more danger of getting lost, of being crushed by avalanches or of falling off a precipice. And yet, people believe they need no one, they can get by on their own! It’s extraordinary! Nowadays, when spirituality, or what some people call spirituality, is in vogue, it’s not surprising there are so many unbalanced, mentally disturbed people about. They tried to conquer summits without a true guide, and that could only ever end in a fall.
