The cross is a symbol which has its origins in nature …
The cross is a symbol which has its origins in nature itself. It is the cross that enables us to find our bearings in space. The four cardinal points – north-south and east-west – form a cross which gives structure to space. We find this cross in astrology, in the two perpendicular axes of the ascendant-descendant and midheaven-zenith, which divide the circle of the zodiac. This is the cross of destiny, which we must learn to carry if we want to gain immortality. The vertical line represents the masculine principle and the horizontal line the feminine principle – the two principles which are the basis of all creation. The masculine principle is associated with fire, which rises, and the feminine principle with water, which spreads. And the cross is also a tree which teaches us how to climb from earth to heaven. We find this in the sephirotic Tree, in the cabbalists’ Tree of Life.
