By associating itself primarily with the sacrifice of Jesus, Christianity has stressed the painful and tragic aspect of the cross. In reality, we must recognize in the cross a significance far greater in magnitude. In universal symbolism, the cross is the matter into which the Christ, the Cosmic Spirit, descends in order to bring it to life. In human beings, of course, the spirit can be engulfed by matter. If a person does nothing to animate his matter, it eventually becomes his tomb, and unfortunately that is what happens to so many people who allow the spirit to be buried within them. Matter is the cross upon which the spirit is continually sacrificed, but this sacrifice is meaningful only if matter is transformed and becomes purer and more alive.
