Faith can be described as a work we do on our beliefs. Yes, …

Faith can be described as a work we do on our beliefs. Yes, it is a work of reflection, of critical reasoning. And those who choose not to do this work often fall prey to superstitions, because passing from belief to superstition is very easy. Since human beings always need to believe in something, those who do not understand what faith truly is cling to all kinds of triviality: for them a certain object is a lucky charm, a certain number or day of the week is favourable and another unfavourable, an encounter with a certain person on the street is either a good or bad omen, and so on. I don’t deny that we can assign significance to objects, numbers, days and encounters, but this can never take the place of a faith based on the laws governing our psychic and spiritual life.
