Passions - their heat awakens our animal nature: controlling them
Passions have a special kind of heat that arouses our animal nature. Most wild animals and beasts of prey are found in equatorial forests where the climate is very hot. Similarly, those who live much of the time at their own equator (stomach and sexual organs) fuel their passions (wild beasts), which then begin to proliferate. And if you heat someone with the fire of passions, you awaken all the wild beasts within them. The heat generated by the passions must be avoided. This is why a spiritual Master is careful not to let his disciples linger in the heat; he places them in the cooler climate of wisdom. When you are very rich and famous, you live in a warm climate and enjoy an abundance of everything; this is the opportunity for your wild beasts to awaken, and if you do not know how to control them, you will indulge yourself in the pursuit of pleasure and the satisfaction of your ambitions, whatever the cost to others. In this way you will gradually descend into hell. This is why it is far better for those who are weak not to be too well off materially: it will be easier for them to control their inner beasts of prey.
