Fasting - on the physical, astral and mental planes

We need to learn to transpose certain concepts onto the different planes. For example, it is said that fasting casts out evil spirits. But fasting should not be understood only in terms of the physical plane. If undesirable spirits have taken up residence in the physical body and are causing physical problems, a physical fast can drive them out. But these spirits can also lodge in our astral and mental bodies, manifesting in the form of coarse cravings and deranged thoughts, constantly urging us to take in the food that they enjoy. So, to get rid of these undesirable spirits, we must stop feeding them. In other words, we must endeavour to replace inferior thoughts and feelings with those that are pure and full of light. If we deprive these evil spirits of their nourishment—of a vice or specific weakness—they are forced to fast, and upon sensing the threat of starvation, they will leave us. This is how certain ideas must be understood.
