Evil - it has a constructive role to play in the universe

For thousands of years, human beings have been begging God to destroy evil, and God has simply scratched His head and smiled, saying to Himself, ‘Once my poor children understand how useful their suffering is, they will stop asking me to do away with it.’ But a great many prayers will be said before that day comes. Of course we must pray, but this is what we should ask for: ‘Lord God, help me to understand how You created the world, how You see things. Grant me understanding, wisdom and intelligence so that I, too, may be above evil and untouched by it. Teach me to use it to accomplish something truly glorious.’ Those who think along these lines soon see that evil has a constructive role to play in the universe. Perhaps you will object that you have been taught otherwise. Yes, but what you have been taught is incomplete; it is well and true for children, but reality is something quite different. The whole of creation proves that evil is indispensable to the economy of the cosmos.
