God - worshipping Him in spirit and in truth: a phenomenon of the inner life
Jesus said, ‘The hour is coming when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.’ However, we cannot expect all human beings to detach themselves from the material, outward expressions of religion, and worship God only ‘in spirit and in truth’. The fulfilment of Jesus’ prophecy is drawing near, and for some it has already come to pass, but we must understand that such a change cannot happen for the whole world all at once, because it is an event of the inner life. When an event occurs on the physical plane, everybody experiences it at the same time. If a council decrees that as of a certain date the Mass will no longer be said in Latin, from that date onwards, the change is clear for all the faithful to see. But when Jesus says: ‘The hour is coming when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth’, he is speaking of a phenomenon of the inner life whose realization depends on our degree of evolution.
